African Basil

Ocimum gratissimum

Also known as Clove Basil, Wild Basil and many other local names, this is one of the herbs known as "Tulsi" and is native to Africa, Madagascar and southern Asia. It is a large shrub growing to 3m over time, but takes well to pruning and can be kept much smaller.

The leaves make a delicious aromatic tea, with a basil-clove like flavor, which is highly valued for its medicinal properties. It is also used as a culinary herb in west Africa and in the Caribbean.

African Basil prefers full sun but can also grow in the shade, however growth will be reduced.
It is tolerant of most soil types, does not need much in the way of fertiliser, and prefers free draining soil. It can probably handle a light frost once established but can also be planted in a pot and kept under shelter over the colder months. It is drought tolerant and thrives in hot conditions.
