Egyptian Willow
Salix aegyptica
Also known as Musk willow, this species is native to eastern Europe and western Asia. Here in New Zealand it grows to 4-5 metres tall
This is a new species of willow that we are trialing at twin falls; we think it has lots of potential as a support species in our food forest and as a fodder species on the farm.
The leaf shape is different from most willows; it has broader leaves with a soft underside and a toothed edge.
It is similar in its uses and growing conditions to other willow species, preferring wet soil, providing highly palatable fodder for animals, and being well suited to coppicing and chop and drop management in a food forest.
It produces catkins over winter and into early spring so is one of the first pollen sources available to bees.
