Sweet Granadilla Passionfruit

Passiflora ligularis

Native to Central and South America, this passionfruit has stunning blue flowers followed by large fruit which ripen from green to bright yellow. The fruit have a wonderful sweet, mellow flavour, without the tanginess of the purple variety, and are at their best when picked with some patches of green colouring still on them.

Sweet Granadilla needs a trellis or structure to climb up; we have had good success growing it up into the canopy of totara trees on the edge of our food forest, and also growing it over our concrete water tank, where it appreciates the extra warmth provided.

It is less frost hardy than the more common purple passionfruit (Passiflora edulis); it can often recover from a light frost but does much better in a completely frost-free location.

Our vines seem to fruit randomly throughout much of the year, and are often covered in fruit and flowers at the same time. They need well-drained soil to do well, and appreciate fertility. They do best if planted in a spot where the base of the plant is shaded, but where the vines can grow into full sun. Will usually fruit from 2-3 years.

Please note that this plant has been added to the Auckland Regional Pest Management Plan 2020-2030 so we are unable to send plants to addresses in the Auckland region.
