Yellow Bells
Tecoma Stans
Also known as yellow elder, or yellow bells.
This is a new plant we are excited to be trialing here at Twin Falls, native to the southern United States through to south America.
It produces masses of small, bright yellow flowers which are a good source of nectar for bees and butterflies. It is evergreen in frost free sites, but can be deciduous in colder areas.
It grows into a large shrub about two metres high, but can be kept smaller through regular pruning. It responds well to a hard prune, making it an excellent species for chop and drop agroforestry.
It is an early succession plant, handling dry and low fertility soils, so is a great choice for a developing food forest. It is somewhat shade tolerant so it can continue in the system for a number of years as a medium strata plant. Needs protection from heavy frosts.
